Stem cell ethical dilemma Essays
Stem cell ethical dilemma Essays Stem cell ethical dilemma Essay Stem cell ethical dilemma Essay Essay Topic: Emma Rebuttal The employment of cloning and human embryonic stem cells is of the most significant innovations in medicine (Wobus and Boheler, 2005).à The discovery of the ability to manipulate embryonic stem cells has created the fields of regenerative medicine and cellular therapy, which aim to treat debilitating and/or fatal conditions that were earlier acknowledged to be incurable (Taupin, 1996).à Unfortunately, this breakthrough has brought forth issues regarding the value of life.à Technically, cloning of embryonic stem cells involve collection of embryos that are ethically regarded at the earliest stages of human life (Brown, 2006).à Ethical arguments have arisen, questioning whether it is right to improve life by destroying another human life in the form of an embryo.à This paper will describe the technique of therapeutic cloning as well as enumerate ethical arguments that renounce the use of the cloning technology and the use of spare embryos for biom edical research and therapeutics. One major ethical issue regarding the use of ââ¬Å"spareâ⬠embryos is the lack of respect for the embryo.à The concern is associated to the possible future demand for embryos once this cellular technology is determined to be successfully therapeutic.à Embryos might later be treated as therapeutic materials or commodities instead of living beings at their initial stages.à There is also a risk for a devaluation of embryos, wherein the loss of human life may later in time be tolerated instead of prevented (Bobrow, 2005).à In addition, the acceptance of destruction of embryos may serve as a precedent for implementation of other controversial biomedical acts such as creation of embryo ââ¬Å"factoriesâ⬠, cloned babies and mass production of ââ¬Å"spare partsâ⬠from fetuses (Hug, 2005, 2006).à There is claim for the scientific community that employment of spare embryos may not automatically mean any disrespect towards embryo s because the destruction of embryos in order to collect stem cells results in the provision of new therapeutics for specific medical disorders.à Certain scientists have actually claimed that it is more immoral to destroy embryos during in vitro fertilization because those embryos are not implanted or donated for further use but are actually discarded, unlike embryos that are destroyed for stem cell research which are cautiously propagated and ultimately designed to replace defective tissues and cells for medical therapeutics.à Such rebuttal from the scientific community is not good enough because they actually approach the issue of choosing between the lesser evil option.Another major issue that is being publicly scrutinized is whether the creation of embryos for research purposes is morally worse than using ââ¬Å"spareâ⬠embryos from IVF cases for experiments.à Such issue reflects the intention of each act, and the idea of using leftover embryos from in vitro fertil ization protocols is much more tolerable to society than the simple creation of research-oriented embryos because there is less guilt involved in using extra or spare embryos from IVF cases than creating embryos that could have been another human being but their chance to live has been taken away.à The scientific community has tried to explain that production and destruction of spare embryos is a normal physiological event during pregnancy, which enables a sibling embryo to complete the entire gestational range (Borge and Evers, 2003).à They claim that this kind of sacrifice is also necessary to promote life for the sibling embryo. The controversy regarding the ethical issues of embryonic stem cell research impacts the entire human population.à Each individual in the society has a susceptibility to contract a disease that might possibly need the use of stem cells that can replace defective ones in the body.à We have heard of a number of public figures that have suffered f rom diseases that could have been resolved through the use of embryonic stem cells.à The late former President Ronal Reagan suffered from Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease and the late actor Christopher Reeve experienced spinal cord injury.à Both of these individuals are prime examples of people who could have benefited from the results of embryonic stem cell research.à Stem cells may be cultured and manipulated to differentiate into specific types of cells such as astrocytes or brain cells for Alzheimerââ¬â¢s patients, and neural cells for patients with spinal cord injury (Snow, 2003).à However, nothing has been done since 2001 because the federal government has put a hold on any research activities that involves stem cell manipulation and experimentation.A solution to current debate on the ethical issues associated with embryonic stem cell research is the comprehensive explanation of the definition of embryonic stem cells.à It is imperative that the non-scientific publi c understand the principles and techniques behind the generation of embryonic stem cells.à It is also important that the public know that harvesting embryonic stem cells is not much different from abortion.à It is also essential to understand that the body of a human female biologically destroys or discards hundred of eggs cells through the natural course.à The scientific group, in turn, should be patient enough to explain the area of embryonic stem cell research.à I think that the ethical debate on the use of embryonic stem cells for research originates mainly from the miscommunication, misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the concept of embryonic stem cells.à In addition, the public only relies on the information that is released by senators and stem cell research activists, who have actually distorted the concept of stem cell research.à Should the scientific world be humble enough to example the basics of stem cell research, including the misnomers and bene fits of the research, the ethical debate on this issue would decrease and might even vanish. The debate on the ethical issues of stem cell research is just one of several topics that have been under intense scrutiny by the public eye.à Other issues of human concern include the employment of genetically modified organisms (GMO), organic foods, genetic engineering and biotechnology.à It should be known that these technological innovations were basically created to improve the quality of life and not to destroy existing life forms.à Everything that interacts with human beings has its benefits and disadvantages, yet these biomedical breakthroughs are the usual focus of attention of the public.à However, if we weigh the benefits and risks of stem cell research, we will realize that the benefits of stem cell research far outweighs the disadvantages that may result from the use of this technology.à We should always remember that decades ago, so many lives were lost from bacte rial infection because antibiotics were not discovered yet.à Today, antibiotics are a common treatment regime for bacterial infections, which is a huge benefit to human health, but it also has resulting in the creation of drug-resistant strains of bacteria.à The same setting may also be observed in terms of stem cell research, but we should intelligently consider both sides of the technology. After describing the pros and cons of two major ethical issues, I personally believe that the utilization of cloning techniques is unacceptable. à I think that the ethical questions raised against the technique shows that there is an urgent need to review and prevent the employment of such revolutionary technology, as well as promote the importance of human life and respect.à More effort should be given by both scientific and legislative communities to understand and disseminate any human rights that are violated by this technology, so that they would give more respect to life as all the rest of the society has shown over the last centuries.

Bombing of Pearl Harbor Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Bombing of Pearl Harbor - Essay Example Due to its massive impact on the foreign and war policy, the attack is also considered a defining moment in the US history. Rightly, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared December 7, 1941 as the date, country would live in ââ¬Ëinfamy.ââ¬â¢ Later ââ¬ËRemember Pearl Harborââ¬â¢ became a universal theme in the wartime propaganda (Slackman, 1990). Pearl Harbor is 10 square miles of navigable water located on the southern coast of Oahu island in Hawaii. It had capacity to hold large warships and submarines. Even prior to the transfer of Pacific Fleet from San Diego on the west coast in 1940, Pearl Harbor was under development as a major naval base. The revamping of the Pearl Harbor had begun in 1936. At the time of attack, the Pearl Harbor was equipped with an industrial plant for repair and maintenance of warships and oil tanks for fuelling purposes. Central to the Harbor was a Naval Air Station for fighter planes. However, facilities Pearl Harbor were grossly inadequate to meet the needs of Fleet and its large manpower. The housing and recreational facilities were grossly inadequate for thousands of sailors, marines, and soldiers even though a massive project was underway for proper accommodation of the Pacific Fleet and thousands of its marines and sailors. The inadequacy of facilities had rendered the Fleet handicapped and vulnerable to attack. As a result, the morale of the forces was on the low ebb. Roosevelt too was convinced of the vulnerability of the Pearl Harbor, but the White House repeatedly ignored warnings and intercepted messages of an impending attack. The attack was master-minded by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet. The attacking force was immediately commanded by Vice-Admiral Chuichi Nagumo. Senior officers ensured that planning was text-book perfect, but Japans limited energy resources was the weakest link in the plan (Maechling, 2000). Consequently, the attack plan was complex and it

Ibn Roshd - Essay Example From 1169 to 1172, he was the judge of Seville and later on being the chief judge of Cordova from 1172 to 1182. He became the physician of the royal court on 1182. He was exiled on 1195 and died in Marrakesh, Morocco in 1198 (Hassan, 1). He was noted to be having a wide range of impact in philosophy not just in terms of Islamic works but also in terms of the works by Jewish philosophers. Saint Thomas Aquinas pertained to him as ââ¬Å"The Commentatorâ⬠as the saint believed Averroes had a major role in the rediscovery of Aristotleââ¬â¢s philosophical works (Maslaha.Org). He influenced a handful of writers and his name was mentioned in their literary masterpieces. Dante referred to him as the man ââ¬Å"who made the great commentaryâ⬠(Maslaha.Org). Ibn Rushdââ¬â¢s Tahafut Al-Tahafut (The Incoherence of the Incoherence) is considered to be his most influential literary work. In the said book, Aristotleââ¬â¢s philosophy against Al-Ghazaliââ¬â¢s claims that Aristotleanism was inconsistent and was insulting Islam. Here he showed being fair towards religion and not siding thoughts or beliefs that were meant to destroy the relationship of religion and philosophy. He did not turn away from his religious beliefs but instead he is incorporating it into studies in the field of science for the advantage of both fields (Rushd & Van der Bergh, 156-161). His works are still being commended and recognized. It is not because he is an Islam who had a grasped of Jewish Philosophy but because he disregarded oneââ¬â¢s religion to accommodate ideas and studies to be able to fully understand what was meant by certain literary works without having a negative connotation. Usually when a literary work is written, bias can be considered inevitable that can oppose or agree because of a writerââ¬â¢s race, ethnicity or

The Riders Essay -- Literary Analysis, Tim Winton
An individualââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËSense of Placeââ¬â¢ is predominantly their place of belonging and acceptance in the world, may it be through a strong physical, emotional or spiritual connection. In Tim Wintonââ¬â¢s novel ââ¬ËThe Ridersâ⬠, the concept of Sense of Place is explored through the desperate journey of its protagonist, Fred Scully. Scullyââ¬â¢s elaborate search for identity throughout the novel is guided and influenced by the compulsive love he feels for his wife Jennifer and their family morals, the intensity of hope and the destruction it can cause and the nostalgic nature of Wintonââ¬â¢s writing. Two quotes which reflect the ideals of a personââ¬â¢s Sense of Place are ââ¬Å"Experience is not what happens to a man. It is what a man does with what happens to him.ââ¬â¢(Aldous Huxley) and ââ¬Å"It is not down in any map. True places never are.â⬠(Herman Melville). Huxley and Melvilleââ¬â¢s statements closely resemble Fred Scullyââ¬â¢s jou rney and rectify some of his motivations throughout the text. Scullyââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËSense of Placeââ¬â¢ strongly revolves around the idea of a healthy marriage, a happy family, and ultimately, the presence of love. He believes that he and Jennifer have an honest relationship and that she is like his ââ¬Å"sheet anchor...a steadying influence on himâ⬠, (p.20) but Winton contradicts this by frequently incorporating foreshadowing into Scullyââ¬â¢s dreams to signify that Scullyââ¬â¢s marriage is not what it seems. ââ¬ËIn his dreams that night he ran, never stopping to see what was behind him, blindly going on into darknessââ¬â¢ (p.22). This quote highlights his trusting nature towards his relationship with Jennifer, and foreshadows the ââ¬Å"blindâ⬠shock that he will suffer when he is betrayed. Scully does not only feel intense love for his wife, he is also devoted to his daughter Billie. He b... ...ecomes clear, that Scullyââ¬â¢s home, his life and ultimately his Sense of Place is in Ireland with Billie by his side. It is with this newfound knowledge that Melvilleââ¬â¢s quote rings true: Scullyââ¬â¢s true places; his daughter and his memories cannot be found on any map, only deep inside his heart. Fred Scully endured an emotionally destructive journey in order to discover his true identity and Sense of Place. In order to attain his identity Scully learnt how love could be both dangerous and wholesome, how much it hurts to have his hopes raised only to be shattered by the truth and experienced spiritual travels back to his secure past. Throughout Scullyââ¬â¢s journey Winton reinforces the concept of Sense of place with the techniques of flashbacks and foreshadowing, which crucially contribute to Scullyââ¬â¢s newfound Sense of Place: anywhere where Billie and him are together.

Financial Accounting
Veronica Bradley Financial Accounting August 12, 2012 Internal Controls Case Study 2 Internal Controls LJB Company, a local distributor, has asked your accounting firm to evaluate their system of internal controls because they are planning to go public in the future. The Company has to check the internal controls of a system of checks and balances designed to detect and prevent fraud and errors. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act requires U. S. companies to enhance their systems of internal control. The company hired has to detect the internal control system and meet the companies requirements. The internal control standards applicable to Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) apply only to large public companies listed on U. S. exchanges. There is a continuing debate as to whether non-U. S. companies should have to comply with this extra layer of regulation. Debate about international companies (non-U. S. ) adopting SOX-type standards centers on whether the benefits exceed the costs. The concern is that the highe r costs of SOX compliance are making the U. S. securities markets less competitive. These activities are the backbone of the companyââ¬â¢s efforts to address the risks it faces, such as fraud. The specific control activities used by a company will vary, depending on managementââ¬â¢s assessment of the risks faced. This assessment is heavily influenced by the size and nature of the company. The principles of internal control activities are (1) establishment of responsibility, (2) segregation of duties, (3) documentation procedures, (4) physical controls, (5) independent internal verification, and (6) human resource controls. Advise the President of what the company is doing right (they are doing some things well) and also recommend to the President whether or not they should buy the indelible ink machine. When you advise the President, please be sure to reference the applicable internal control principle that applies. The things that the company is doing well are that using the pr e- numbered invoices. When the company was not using pre-numbering they violated the documentation procedures. If pre-numbered documents are not used, then it is virtually impossible to account for the documents. This will keep good documentation on some things for future reference to have on hand and things arenââ¬â¢t done more than one time by different people.Pre-numbering helps to prevent a transaction from being recorded more than once, or conversely, from not being recorded at all. Second, the control system should require that employees promptly forward source documents for accounting entries to the accounting department. This control measure helps to ensure timely recording of the transaction and contributes directly to the accuracy and reliability of the accounting records. With the information provided the company should invest in an indelible ink machine. This will put the company in more control of accounting procedures. And with this in hand will help reduce the chanc e of any fraud going on in the company with the checks being more manageable. Use of physical controls are essential. The accountantââ¬â¢s act of keeping the checks in a safe in his office is in accordance with the physical controls principle. This reflects the safeguarding of assets and enhances the accuracy and reliability of the accounting records. The President should also know what they are doing wrong like the petty cash situation. All employees have access to the petty cash in a desk drawer and are asked to only place a note if they use any of the cash. The company had a hard time getting the employee to admit it was him because the company does not assign individual passwords. The company is violating the establishment of responsibility, and segregation of duties, documentation procedures, independent internal verification and human resource controls. With the petty cash Internal control over a petty cash fund is strengthened by: (1) having a supervisor make surprise count s of the fund to confirm whether the paid petty cash receipts and fund cash equal the fund amount, and (2) canceling or mutilating the paid petty cash receipts so they cannot be resubmitted for reimbursement. With the establishment of responsibility the company is violating that responsibility by not assigning responsibility to specific employees. Control is most effective when only one person is responsible for a given task. Without doing this leave the door open for fraud and other possibilities to of things to occur. With the company hiring convicted felons and sex offenders with them having a human resources department this all would have been avoided. They wouldnââ¬â¢t have to worry about employees using the internet to view porn sites. When the company hires employees they should have an independent verification for each individual employee. This will track all the employees with their computer and signing in and out of the system and all things that require a verification to proceed. An accountant is not certifiable to interview everyone for certain positions unless it is involved with their position. The President of the company needs to do a big evaluation of the system of internal controls to make sure all the standards are being met for planning the future of the company. As discussed earlier in the requirements of the company in order for them to go public in the future. They are going to have to follow all the guidelines for the principles of internal control are: establishment of responsibility; segregation of duties; documentation procedures; physical controls; independent internal verification; and human resource controls. Financial Accounting Financial statements produced using FIRS were used to obtain startup fund. Current quarterly statements are produced using this format to maintain consistency and clarity for investors' sake. SUBS lists balance sheet items, revenue, liabilities, and share measurements. GIBBS follows FIRS rules when reporting their financial data in every month financial statements fairly and accurately. It is good to use FIRS in the accounting process for any business so that all financial are being reported fairly and accurately.SUBS records assets at their cost using cost principle. International revenue from customers that belong to various countries is tracked and reported using FIRS. SUBS combines GAP along with the FIRS so that largely impacts stock markets, investors, corporate management, accounting standards and accounting professionals' setters. Cubit's financial statement includes GAP and FAST principals to accommodate US based customers and accountants.FIRS is dynamic and it helps the com pany produce financial statements dynamically in a constant changing environment. The convergence of both these standards helped SUBS in producing financial statements with professionalism, uniformity, optimism and transparency. The major difference between GAP and FIRS comes down to being rules- based vsâ⬠¦ Reminisces-based; this poses a challenge in areas such as the income statement, consolidation, the earnings-per-share calculation, the inventory, and the costs. In consolidation, U.S. GAP prefers a risks-and-reward model where as the FIRS favors a control model. U. S. GAP shows extraordinary items as net income where as FIRS segregates. U. S. GAP provides the option of LIFO, average cost or FIFO where as FIRS does not allow LIFO for inventory valuation. Under the FIRS the PEPS calculation does not average the individual interim period calculations, but the U. S. GAP does. Regarding developmental costs, GAP considers them as expenses while FIRS capitalizes them based on speci fic criteria. Both FAST and FIRS have identified short- and long-term convergence projects, including 20 reporting areas where differences have been resolved and completed. 3. Pro Formal 4. Internal Controls SUBS needs internal controls to provide assurance in order to achieve forecasted financial reporting, compliance and operating objectives. These internal controls help SUBS to achieve its mission by ensuring that the policies, directions, practices and reoccurred approved and designed by management and board of directors are implemented properly and functions accordingly. It also ensures effectiveness is sustained in an ever changing dynamic environment. All of the five control components in the COCO integrated framework, Control Activities, Control Environment, Risk Assessment, Monitoring, and Information & Communication are very important. SUBS implements all the five controls as an essential internal control and doesn't compromise on any one of them. Of the five, the most impor tant two implemented as critical are control activities and control environment. The Effects Of Parental Rights On Children - 3262 Words
Today, it seems as if more and more parents are choosing to not vaccinate their children. Instead, these parents seem to be circumventing the mandate by utilizing, sometimes arbitrarily, the exemptions carved out by the states. But the growing number of unvaccinated children and the amount of outbreaks of preventable infectious diseases present some legal issues. One of which is the continued tension between the rights of parents and the governmentââ¬â¢s interest in the welfare of children. Parents are normally free to make the decisions for and on behalf of their children without having to worry about outside interferences.
